Nuku-Hiva

After 25 days at sea, we arrived this morning in Nuku-Hiva, we were actually early, we tacked in front of the Taio Hae Bay waiting for daylight to enter this unknown place. We dropped the anchor in 40 feet of water. This place is just gorgeous.

http://donpedro.lediouris.net/voyage/locator/locator.html?latitude=-8.916166666666667&longitude=-140.10016666666667&scale=13&currentdate=27%20Oct%202010%2C%2011%3A22%20PDT%20%28GMT%20-0700%29%3Cbr%3ETaio%20Hae%20Bay.%20Nice%20to%20be%20here.

Land ho!/Terre!

We've seen the land tonight at 6:40pm (PDT). Nuku-Hiva and Ua Huka.
We're approaching Nuku-Hiva, but the wind shifted North East, and dropped.
We still believe we can make landfall by tomorrow...

http://donpedro.lediouris.net/voyage/locator/locator.html?latitude=-8.309166666666666&longitude=-139.76433333333333&scale=6&currentdate=26%20Oct%202010%2C%2018%3A51%20PDT%20%28GMT%20-0700%29%3Cbr%3EHDG%3A204%2C%20Speed%3A04.08%20kts%3Cbr%3EWind%3A09.29%20kts%2C%2070%3Cbr%3EWind%3A%20Force%203%2C%20ENE%3Cbr%3EWater%20Temp%3A26.5%C2%BAC%3Cbr%3ELight%20winds...

From fall to spring/De l'automne au printemps

We've crossed the Line just before sun rise, at 13:52 UT.
For lunch we've opened the bottle of wine presented by Michel for the occasion, 2003 Saint Estephe, south is good!
The previous night, 6 flying fish landed on the deck. They ended up in the frying pan, Even Brendan would have loved it!

Very slow day today...
Plus some current - probably wind generated - against us.
Connection is bad. Do not be surprised not to find new posts...

Fishing/En peche

We caught this morning a beautiful mahi-mahi, but that one managed to get off the hook when I was about to pull it into the cockpit. Ah shit!
We put the line back in the water, but at night, the leurre was gone... We must have caught something with teeth.
After that - at night - the wind picked up. We are heading against a force 5 to 6. Welcome to the trade wind.

http://donpedro.lediouris.net/voyage/locator/locator.html?latitude=5.092666666666666&longitude=-132.5735&scale=5&currentdate=19%20Oct%202010%2C%2009%3A17%20PDT%20%28GMT%20-0700%29%3Cbr%3EHDG%3A227%2C%20Speed%3A06.68%20kts%3Cbr%3EWind%3A16.48%20kts%2C%20154%3Cbr%3EWind%3A%20Force%205%2C%20SSE%3Cbr%3EWater%20Temp%3A25.5%C2%BAC%3Cbr%3EL%27alize%20sur%20le%20nez%21

We had a good night, bouncing from squall to squall.
But no sun this morning, clouds all over the place, plus some rain.
Very British, indeed.

At last!/Enfin!

The ITCZ is behind us! That's the good news. The other news is that we are heading in 30 knots of wind. We've put the dodger on, to keep the crew happy :)
Anyway, last night was a real big mess.

Rodeo

What a night! Rodeo from squall to squall all night long, non stop.
We were carrying yankee, staysail, and two reefs in the main.
Rarely under 6 knots, very often above 7.
Did not sleep.

In the Trade/ Dans l'alize

Yesterday was a real trade day. The wind had shifted East a bit at the end of the night, and in the morning we had all sails out, full main, full mizzen, yankee, staysail. Then it picked up and we reefed the main. Then it shifted north-east, and we dropped the mizzen. It picked up again, we put a second reef in the main. The night went like this, in a steady strong 5 to 6 beaufort. And the was the first night without the foulies. This morining, water temp is 25.6 Celcius.

http://donpedro.lediouris.net/voyage/locator/locator.html?latitude=16.525666666666666&longitude=-129.17733333333334&scale=5&currentdate=13%20Oct%202010%2C%2008%3A26%20PDT%20%28GMT%20-0700%29%3Cbr%3EHDG%3A172%2C%20Speed%3A05.86%20kts%3Cbr%3EWind%3A%20Force%204%2C%20NE%C2%BCE%3Cbr%3EIn%20the%20trade

Finally, the clouds cleared up a bit. It looks more like Trade Winds.
The moon is now 2 days old, making it even nicer.

Alize breton/Britain Trade Wind

We are now officially in the Trade Winds, but - apart from the temperature - it looks like some place in Brittany. Overcast sky, and choppy seas. And no flying fish. The ones we've seen the other day must have been placed there by the visitor's center...

http://donpedro.lediouris.net/voyage/locator/locator.html?latitude=21.028&longitude=-129.69566666666665&scale=5&currentdate=11%20Oct%202010%2C%2006%3A16%20PDT%20%28GMT%20-0700%29%3Cbr%3EHDG%3A183%2C%20Speed%3A04.93%20kts%3Cbr%3E

Impossible

Based on the Pilot Charts, it is impossible to have calms or south wind where we are, absolutely impossible.
But that is what we had last night, though...

http://donpedro.lediouris.net/voyage/locator/locator.html?latitude=27.345666666666666&longitude=-129.23583333333335&scale=14&currentdate=8%20Oct%202010%2C%2009%3A14%20PDT%20%28GMT%20-0700%29%3Cbr%3EHDG%3A182%2C%20Speed%3A04.02%20kts%3Cbr%3EWind%3A%20Force%202-3%2C%20E%3Cbr%3EApproaching%20the%20Trade%20Wind...
